Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer, so named because if affects the mesothelium, a lining which covers the internal organs. It most frequently affects the lungs, (pleural mesothelioma), but can also affect the heart and abdomen.

During the early twentieth century, it became clear that lung diseases were becoming prevalent among asbestos factory workers in Britain, and after the second world war, many cases were reported by workers in South African asbestos mines, but political pressure from the mining industry stifled further research. One aspect of the condition which was established in the 1930's was that it can have a long latency period - up to 25 years.

Because of the seriousness of the disease, and because it is generally accepted that a causal relationship can be shown with asbestos, a significant legal industry specializing in the prosecution of such cases has developed.
